Gynecologists Weigh In: Do You Really Need to Wear Underwear with Leggings?
The question of whether or not to wear underwear with leggings has long been a topic of debate. This issue is akin to the perennial pineapple-on-pizza debate, with passionate opinions on both sides. While many people believe that wearing underwear is essential for comfort and hygiene, others choose to forgo it for various reasons.
Dr. Sheryl A. Ross, a board-certified OB/GYN in Santa Monica, acknowledges the complexity of the issue. “The days of baggy cotton sweats have been replaced with high-tech fabrics designed to help your skin breathe, absorb moisture, and prevent you from getting drenched in sweat,” she explains. This advancement in activewear raises an important question: Is it truly necessary to wear underwear with these modern leggings?
Dr. Alyssa Dweck, a board-certified OB/GYN and chief medical director at Bonafide Health, adds that this topic is indeed controversial. “Some women find that wearing underwear can cause chafing, rubbing, and confinement, as well as visible panty lines under yoga pants,” she notes. On the other hand, some women prefer to wear underwear to avoid visible camel toe and to feel more secure.
Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal comfort and preference. Dr. Ross advises that if you choose to skip underwear, it’s crucial to ensure that your leggings are up to the task. “Yeast and bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments,” she says. “As long as your workout clothing has built-in liners with special antibacterial fabrics that can absorb sweat, you should be fine going without underwear.”
For those who prefer a middle ground, there are numerous options for discreet and comfortable underwear designed to eliminate issues like twisting and visible panty lines. Regardless of whether one opts to wear underwear or not, the key is to choose what feels most comfortable and confident. This choice is ultimately about personal preference and ensuring one’s own comfort and well-being.
